Roam Gear 300W Solar Panel Fixing Guide
This guide provides step-by-step instructions to securely fix your Roam Gear 300W solar panel using 3M VHB 5952 tape for a strong and lasting bond. Follow these steps carefully for optimal results.
Quick Stats
- The normal tensile strength of 3M VHB 5952 tape on aluminum is approximately 4.9 kg/cm²
Tools and Materials Needed
- 3M VHB 5952 Tape
- Cleaning solution (preferably isopropyl alcohol)
- Microfiber cloth
- Scissors or utility knife
- Baking paper
- Corflute/tunnelcore board.
Step 1: Prepare the Mounting Surface
a. Clean the Surface
Ensure the surface where the solar panel will be mounted is clean and free of dust, oils, or any residue. Use a microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol to clean thoroughly, allowing the surface to dry completely before proceeding.
b. Dry and Inspect
Once cleaned, inspect the area for any leftover debris or moisture, as these can weaken the bond.
Step 2: Apply 3M VHB 5952 Tape to the Solar Panel
a. Run a Continuous Strip of Tape
Run a continuous strip of VHB tape as close to the edge of the solar panel as possible. This creates a strong, even bond along the perimeter, helping to prevent dirt and water from getting under the panel and ensuring long-lasting durability.
Then run 2 separate strips through the long side so secure the middle of the panel.
Secure to a sheet of corflute or tunnelcore. This creates an air gap between the panel and the tent. Available from bunnings - tunnelcore 2250 x 1200 x 2.5mm $14
The air gap ensures your panel works as optimal as possible. The optimal working temp for most solar panels is 25°C.

b. Firmly Press Tape onto Panel
Press each strip of tape down onto the back of the solar panel, ensuring there are no bubbles or gaps. Applying steady pressure helps maximize the bond.
Step 3: Position and Mount the Panel
a. Align the Panel
We recommend using painters' tape to mark out the corners to allow for better positioning.
Carefully position the solar panel where it will be mounted, Ensure the cables are closest to the hinge side of the tent. Ensuring alignment before making contact with the surface. VHB tape forms an instant bond, so double-check positioning.

b. Remove the backing tape.
c. Press to Bond
Once in place, apply firm, even pressure along the entire panel for several seconds. This helps the tape adhere strongly to the surface.
Step 4: Allow for Curing
For the strongest bond, allow the VHB tape to cure. Though the tape holds immediately, it reaches maximum strength in about 72 hours. Avoid placing heavy stress on the panel or moving it during this period.
Additional Tips
- Temperature Considerations: Apply the tape in temperatures above 10°C (50°F) for optimal adhesion.
Your Roam Gear 300W solar panel is now securely mounted and ready to power your off-grid adventures!
